"Next to Godliness"

Hey guys, it has been a while since the last post and a lot has happened since last month. We have been pretty busy this spring... with the exception of art. My daughter graduated form the University of North Alabama with her degree in art. We are very proud of what she has acomplished. On the art side of life I did participated in the Arts Alive Festival gallery show in Florence, Alabama last weekend. I was very excited to win a 3rd place award and a patron award. We had a great time at the Gala Saturday night. The night was very pleasant and we were introduced to some very nice folks. My charcoal drawing "Next to Godliness", shown above, was part of this years show. The other drawings in the show, in which I have previously posted, "Nail Soup" and "Homefront", were both winners. I am looking foward to the summer months and try to work on some new drawings.

Nail Soup

The story goes that on one cold evening a young mother was wrestling over what to feed her small children and she was frozen with dread. So she phoned her Dad and voiced her concerns as what to do. He told her to fix a pot of "nail soup". She had no idea how to do that and began to inquire of the recipe. The father told her to first find a nail and set it aside, this she quickly did, then he said go to the garden and find any stray potato, carrot, radish or anything left from the harvest and add it to the pot. She did as her father told her to do but she was confused at what to do with the nail. The father's reply was that the nail was to simply get her started. This is the title of my newest drawing..."Nail Soup". It is in honor of those who survive tough times.

Our next event occured in December at Stevenson's Fine Art, in Florence Alabama, the occasion was the annual student show put on by art students of Tim Stevenson. We had a great crowd that showed up in spite of the cold. The place was packed with many new faces as well as old friends. The refreshments were supplied by Randi Gross a fellow artist and over-all fantastic lady. I stil want her recipe for the salmon dip!!! The photo above is of Pat along with her jewelry display. David Walton a wonderful singer/song-writer was present to supply the entertainment. He was just amazing as always.

It has been a busy couple of months and not too much time to post. I do want to get caught up on what has been going on lately. We participated in a couple of show in the area and meet some wonderful people along the way and selling some work. First was the Mars Hill Bible School annual Harvest Village in October. This was a two day festival featuring many opportunites for patrons to sample all of the goodies that go with the fall. We want to thank all who stop by our booth, whether to buy or just to say hello.

I have some new drawings I want to share with you all. These little drawings (a little bigger than a business card) will be offered for sale and if anyone is interested just send me an e-mail. They are all one of a kind original drawings no two are alike. Each one is drawn on 100% cotton, hot press watercolor paper. I will be adding a new drawing every day or so if you want to own an original piece of art this is a good way of starting your "collection".

A Step Up

This drawing comes from a trip made with a couple of friends of mine, Tim Stevenson, a renowned watercolorists from Florence, Alabama and Jerry Foster a wonderful photographer and art teacher at Florence High School. We traveled up to Ethridge, Tennessee to the Amish community and came upon one of the farm houses. I seem to be drawn to old sheds and doorways as subject matter and this old out-building with the textures and shadows called to be drawn. I really like the abstract nature of the composition and the weathered wood with all its texture. It was a fun drawing to do.

Prints are available of the drawing as well as note cards.

I've been pretty busy the last few weeks doing a good bit of drawing and I want to share with you all what I have been up to. In the next few days I will try and post a few of my newest drawings. Most of them are small ranging from 2.5"x3" to 9"x12". We will be participating in a few fall shows and as soon as I can I will be posting some pics of the events. Our next show will be the Mars Hill Harvest Village Festival in Florence, Alabama. The above drawing is not exactly new but it is an example of the types of drawings that you can expect to see.

I want to post some of Pat's beautiful jewelry. For those who don't know she is my wife of 26 years (November). She takes some of my charcoal designs and creates her jewelry. Pretty neat, huh? We had a wonderful time again this year at Athens Art on the Square. The weekend was perfect and the people came out to see the art and hear some great music. The rain held off until we were heading back home. The folks of the AOTS staff were as always very helpful and vendor friendly. Sales for this event were consistant even though we were afraid the economy would have a negative impact. It was also great to see some old friends, Barbara, a buddy from college(Athens State), Dennis Johnson my old art professor and Dr. Murphy from the college dropped by our booth.

Our next show (An Art Affair) has been cancelled due to the weather. Oh well!! That is the price you pay for outdoor shows, however, we are looking foward to First Fridays in Florence on the 2nd of October. Hope to see all of you then.

The end of August ushers in cooler temperatures and the start of the fall show season. September 12th you all can find us in Athens, Alabama at the Art on the Square festival. http://www.artonthesquareathens.com/

We have participated in this show the last two years and the folks in Athens have treated us with great hospitality. We had a great time and was able to win a Third place ribbon as well. The next weekend we will travel to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee at An Art Affair, located on the square. If you are in the area we hope you can stop by our booth and take a look at our new works. As with every month through-out the year we can be found in Florence, Alabama at First Fridays. Hope to see you all there!

Home Front

I have completed a new charcoal drawing. The title is "Home Front". I have had this idea rumbling around in my head for a good while now and it has been fun looking for the particular items that I wanted to include in the work. The drawing is about those who were left behind as loved ones went off to war to defend our county. The setting is WWII 1944. The cards attached to the mirror represent about a year and a half. Look carefully and you can see a photo of her hero and his letters tied lovingly with a ribbon on the dresser. I will have poster prints and note cards of this drawing available in the near future. The poster prints (12"x16") will go for $15.00 and the note cards will be $2.00 ea. We also have note cards available in an 8 card set with a variety of designs for $12.00 each. Well, here it is, the end of the month. Next week we will be setting up for First Fridays in Florence. It will be a good time to try out new products to see if there is any interest. Last week we did a show at the Marriot-Shoals for charity. I believe the weather and the fact it was Memorial day weekend resulted in a small turn out. Oh well, it was fun to get out and talk to some artist friends.

Grandpa was a Carpenter

We had a great weekend even though it rained off and on both days. We had a good time at the Gala event at Arts Alive. I received a Merit Award in the gallery show with my charcoal drawing called "Grandpa was a Carpenter". There were many, many fantastic works representing various media. We also meet some very nice people.
